Women’s Day

International Women’s Rights Day takes place on 8 March each year to commemorate both the social, economic and political achievements and the discrimination and violence to which women have been and are still subjected in many parts of the world. It is still commonly referred to as Women’s Day, although it would be more accurate to call it “International Women’s Day“, since the motivation is not to celebrate but to reflect on the need to achieve real gender equality in the world.

The mimosa
and Women’s Day

The mimosa, the Italian symbol of International Women’s Day. In September 1944, the UDI, Unione Donne in Italia, was founded in Rome; it was the UDI that took the initiative to celebrate, on 8 March 1945, the first Women’s Day in the areas of free Italy. With the end of the war, this anniversary was celebrated throughout Italy and saw the first appearance of its symbol, the mimosa, which bloomed between February and March, according to an idea of Teresa Noce, Rita Montagnana and Teresa Mattei.
