The Celebration
of St. Joseph
As in some countries of Catholic tradition, the Father’s Day is celebrated on the day of St. Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, symbol of humility and dedication. St. Joseph, as a rchetype of the father, in popular tradition also protects orphans, unmarried girls and the unfortunate. In accordance with this, in some areas of Sicily, on 19 March it is traditional to invite the poor to lunch. In other areas, the feast coincides with the end of winter festival: as propitiatory rites, the fallow land is burned on the fields to be worked and bonfires are lit on the squares to be overcome by a leap.
